Assembling a Nendoroid army

28 11 2009

In this hobby, nendoroids are such a big craze that it wouldn’t be surprising to have heard about them or own at least one. With the abundance of styles and characters from anime series, one nendoroid is bound to make it’s way into your home.

I’ve amassed what I think is a sizable collection, but I never posted pictures of what my nendoroid army looks like. The pictures are a bit outdated and do not accurately reflect the enlisting of new recruits.

According to Tsuki-board.net, I supposedly own roughly a combination of 160 nendoroids and nendoroid petites, but the numbers on Tsuki-board is not accurate considering it is open to users adding into the database which invites human error.

My very first nendoroid set was the heavily bootlegged versions of the Death Note and I’ve wisen up to both bootlegs and internet purchases. They were my first and last bootlegs and for those who don’t know the difference, it’s definitely a big difference and going authentic is the way to go in the long run. My first authentic nendoroid purchase (IIRC) was Bincho-tan at a local anime store.

As a completionist, I tend to complete sets regardless of how exclusive and/or limited the figures are or how the odds of being able to acquire the figure are stacked against me. Given the manufacturer behind the nendoroid line is Good Smile Company (for the most part), the exclusives and limiteds released are plentiful and have to be one of the most aggravating line to collect. Anything from event exclusives such as your standard fare of Wonder Festival and Comiket items to the unconventional shrine solicitation, mail-in dvd coupons, webshop, magazine, and video game sets.

If you’re not into cute, super deformed/chibi-fied characters, nendoroids are probably not your thing and it saves you the trouble of having to deal with such a problematic delightful line-up. For the large quantity of nendoroids out there in a typical $34.99 price range, collecting this line quickly adds up in costs. I think the normal retail price that nendoroids are sold for are a bit steep for the amount of quality involved and scale. For around the same price, I could purchase a full-scaled figure from Kotobukiya’s US distributor and mainly prefer full-scaled figures over non-scaled ones. Sometimes, nendoroids have amazing retail prices such as Saber Lion nendoroid at $29.99 and other times nendoroids are regularly priced at $41.99 if they come with additional accessories. From another perspective, the price for this nendoroid is just about right considering this is an imported novelty item.

As you can see, I can’t say “no” to these devilishly cute little items and wonder when or if I’ll ever tire of this figure type. Even with how much is constantly being mass-produced and the never-ending releases of extraneous product I wouldn’t have bought in the first place had a nendoroid or nendoroid petit not been attached to it.

This picture was supposed to go up a few months back but the laptop explosion among other things is the reason why this picture is going up so late. I am missing a handful of recently acquired nendoroids in this picture, but I am sure that I own a good portion of the ones that have come out if I haven’t got them on preorder.

I had a difficult time stacking the boxes of nendoroids on top of one another in fear of the boxes falling over and taking damage. I was rearranging the figure boxes and decided to use some of them as support for the nendoroid wall. Thank you Hayate, Moetan, Hime, Onechanbara, Spirit of Wonder girl, Louise, Reinforce, Haruhi, Iroha, Unity May, Garnet, Hiyori, Chidori, Klan Klang, Kpuhime, Saber Maid and everyone else.

I hope everyone had a really fantastic Thanksgiving holiday. My Thanksgiving holidays are always the same – nothing special and nothing disastrous. I am a bit ticked off that eating establishments overcharge base price just because it’s a holiday, but I should have expected that. Now, I didn’t  have time to cook or prepare anything for Thanksgiving and my family went out to do their own thing this year meaning I couldn’t come over and eat some good food with them.
For all the Black Friday morning shoppers, I hope all of you came out with superb deals.

OMG OMG!!!

I’m always impressed when you post a text about your collection. You own so many figures! It’s unbelievable.
I think you’re the one with the bigger collection among people i visit the blog.
A real shop.

160 nendoroids!!! Woooow a drem.

I appreciate your will to own limited stuffs or having the complete series. I would love to do the same but it’s not in my budget unfortunately.

PS : I have one question (i can’t remember if you talked about it in a previous text) : You let all your figures packaged. You don’t intend to unpack them one day ?

I absolutely despise nendoroids, but I still find myself buying them. But compared to your buying it seems like you have “roid”rage^^

Your wall o’ Nendoroids are truly awesome. Do you intend to collect all the Nendos? My nendos are probably only platoon size now compared to your army since I can only buy selectively …most of my budget still goes to scale figures. ^^”

@kyourin: I am open to the idea of a nendoroid club, but I am too busy to schedule photoshoots of my figures. That and my camera has been unreliable for me in recent times.

@Lyli: Yes, they are in their boxes because I don’t have anything appropriate to display them in and I don’t want an Ikea detolf case as a quick fix. I don’t want an open cabinet because the dusting will be bothersome for me. I intend to debox everything when I have the appropriate setup. Until then, I’m happy admiring them ffrom the display windows :)

@Gordan: Hahaha, I would have never guessed that about you.

@ELT: I want to say “yes”, but we will see. My budget still goes to scaled figures, too. If I didn’t have to worry about scaled figures, then I’d probably own every nendoroid in existence with the exception of the lame GSC prize ones. Relative to scaled figures, nendoroids are still relatively cheaper (imo) even if you factor out limiteds/exclusives and the amount being released.

I understand better.
I’m sure you’ll find the best existing way to expose all your collection.

Nendoroid box wall! O_O

Have to admit I have been (trying) to stick to regular size, but the sheer cuteness factor of the Nendo army is taking effect.

I had no idea you had so many nendoroids! My first nendoroid was Nao of Mabinogi, I really like her a lot. I fell hard for nendoroids in the beginning, but with my recent budget restrictions I’ve pulled back from them a bit. I used to go after every nendoroid regardless of price or my knowledge of the character, but these days I realize I can’t do that anymore without sacrificing some of the 1/8 and larger scaled figures I may want. A few impulse nendoroid pre-orders quickly becomes equal in price to my most desired figures of the year.

Do you like the new approach they’re taking with petit nendoroids? Like with the Bakemonogatari set, selling just 3 but having them come with different pose-able parts? I haven’t gotten my hands on these yet, but I think I like this approach. I was finding that I was running out of shelf space for all the petit nendoroids I owned, and they were starting to make my shelves look crowded. (I had all the Haruhi and Lucky Star sets)

My favorite nendoroids are by far the Lucky Star petit ones, the quality of the first couple volumes of the Haruhi ones doesn’t match up to my Lucky Star ones.

@duckie: Unlike other collectors who primarily collect nendoroids, I don’t really advertise the amount of nendoroids that I own or have on preorder. No one really knows how many of something I really own even though I take pictures of my hauls, haha. I have a very sizable ALTER and Queen’s Blade/Gate collection among other things. I also think it has to do with the fact that I primarily collect scaled figures is that no one really expects me to have a nendoroid army. Nendoroids are very adorable and without really vocally admitting it out loud, I am probably (see absolutely) going to collect all of them. I am really big into aestheticism, so if it looks good to me then I buy it. Due to having such a massive backlog, I might not be able to get familiarized with a character’s background until much later, so it’s easier to get it now than much later. As much as I like hunting, I’d like to limit the amount of time I need to set aside for hunting because that’s time in other activities such as video games that I’m not getting the chance to enjoy. I definitely agree that the sheer amount of nendoroids adds up to a single figure which is typically anywhere from 2-3 regular sized nendoroids. Doing both scaled figures and nendoroids is a dangerous and crazy thing to do especially if you’re an ALTERista and have an eye for limiteds/exclusive products. I don’t know if that is necessarily the problem because desire should always outweigh impulse in my opinion. I find so many good deals that I have really tried hard to resist doing more impulse buys than I already have even if all my impulse buys are figures that I want in the future.

I think you are getting more for your money because it mimics the regular sized nendoroids and that’s always a good thing. I imagine that they will be much nicer because having more poseable parts and different faces is always a plus and I don’t think you can really mess up on the quality control for nendoroids, haha. Well, you can, but relative to scaled figures or prepainted resin or action “dolls, nendoroids are the easiest to mass produce. I am unsure of what petit nendoroid volumes I own because I know I own the first and second volume of the Haruhi series, but I cannot find the other box in my massive collection. I’m gonna have to figure out how to display the petites without them looking busy or detracting from nearby scaled figures.

For some reason, I am going to collect every nendoroid including the petit volumes, but they are not as appealing to me. I see them and think they are cute, but they simply don’t register to me unless I feel some sense of urgency to preorder them or the petits are limited releases. Petit nendoroids are like figmas to me – I’ll get to them when I get to them, haha.

It’s really hard for me to say which ones are my favorites. If I had to say which ones I like the best, it would be:

Asakura Otome, Hakurei Reimu, Miku Hatsune RQ. ver (regular size), Comptiq Izumi Konata, Izumi Konata in Fate/Stay Cosplay ver., Kokonoe Rin, Kemeko Plus, Mabinogi Nao ~Staccato ver.~, Ryofuko (I need to buy this :( ), Dengeki Shana, WF Primula, and Spica petit nendoroid. Suffice to say, I love nendoroids even if I’m not that vocal about it, haha.

Ah! No wonder I had no idea you were so into nendos! My most recent nendo received was Itoshiki of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, definitely one of my favorites now. I’m a sucker for that show/manga. I’m also very fond of the Bon Festival Haruhi puchi, Saber Lion, Miku (regular version), Nagi, and Zange-chan.

Some nendoroids I really love and are worth more to me then some larger scaled figures. I preferred Nagi and Zange as nendos rather than as the larger scaled figures available.
